Members of the USS Norris DD/DDE 859 reunion in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, toured the USS Kidd which stirred memories and gave them an opportunity to explain to their wives and families how they survived in such a small space. The tour concluded with a memorial service to honor departed shipmates.
Despite all odds, destroyermen of the USS Norris showed their determination and commitment to having a good time. Mother Nature dumped Hurricane Georges on them, which closed airports within 100 miles, flooded roads and caused closure and evacuation of the motel. With hard work the motel opened in time. Then, sadly, as the reunion started, chairman Bob Moran learned of his mother’s death.
They toured the Naval Museum, lunched at the Officers Club, enjoyed entertainment and elected new officers at their crew meeting. A gala dinner-dance concluded the reunion.
