Commemoration and Reunion

A long-overdue tribute to Navy Mess Attendants will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, (Section 2E), September 18, 1998 during the reunion of Units K-West and B-East.

The reunion highlight will be a tree planting ceremony and the dedication of a monument to American sailors of African and Asian descent who served faithfully in peace and fought valiantly in war as mess attendants and stewards despite infamous discriminatory conditions to which they were subjected. Members of the mess attendant/steward branch served aboard practically every combatant ship and in every battle, winning some of the nation’s highest decorations. Contact James Lee at 310-637-9127.
