March into Reunion Fun Part 1 – By Lisa A. Alzo, M.F.A.

As the third month of the year, March has plenty of dates to celebrate including Mardi Gras which will take place on Tuesday, March 4th.

For reunion planners it is a great time to start sorting out the details for your event and a Mardi Gras theme might just be your ticket to a memorable time!

In 2011, Mardis Gras was the theme of my family’s reunion, and everyone enjoyed the fun and colorful atmosphere. Below are a few tips from our experience to help liven up your reunion.

  1. Beads and Baubles. Encourage everyone to dress in purple, green, and gold for the occasion. Bring along plenty of beads to wear and for decoration.  At our reunion we had a table where everyone could decorate their own mask. For ideas see: https://craftprojectideas.com/mardi-gras-mask.

  • Go for the Games. Set up a Mardi Gras Trivia as fun way to learn about its history. Fill treasure chests with costume jewelry, play money, and candy gold coins for a fun treasure/scavenger hunt. Play Mardi Gras musical chairs to Zydeco and swing band tunes). Everyone loves a parade—it is a colorful and vibrant part of the festival. Schedule one for your attendees featuring elaborate costumes, lively music, and even floats (if you are really ambitious). Remember to take plenty of pictures and record the stories from your event for future generations! The Vivid-Pix Memory Station https://www.vivid-pix.com/memorystation can help with this task.
